Plants depend on fungi and fungi depend on plants for survival and reproduction in nature. Mutualistic interactions with bidirectional exchange of nutrients and signals between fungi und plant roots were established by the first land plants. Since then they are obligate and omnipresent in tropical and temperate forests.

Diversity, functionality and ecology of these mycorrhizas are investigated by us. We aim to understand general features of the symbiosis and to apply knowledge to sustainable forestry and orchid production.
